Car crash at night city in pieces

A three-vehicle accident in Illinois left one man dead and another injured on Nov. 4. The crash occurred at about 5:10 p.m. on Illinois Route 142 near the border between Hamilton and Jefferson Counties.

A 23-year-old Mount Vernon man was traveling in a 2013 Dodge Avenger in the northbound lane of 142 when he crossed the centerline into southbound traffic. The Avenger traveled into the path of a southbound 2006 GMC Canyon driven by a 69-year-old Dahlgren man. The two vehicles collided, and the impact sent the Avenger crashing into a third vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by a 22-year-old McLeansboro woman.

Officials from the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office pronounced the 69-year-old man dead at the scene of the accident. An emergency crew transported the 23-year-old man to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Details about his condition were not disclosed in reports. The 22-year-old woman suffered no injuries in the crash.

Reports did not indicate whether investigators had identified any causes or contributing factors in the accident. A crash reconstruction officer from Illinois State Police was assigned to investigate.

The pain of losing a family member is often complicated by financial concerns such as burial expenses, lost earnings and other expenses that may leave households in precarious financial situations. Most deceased victims of car accidents contributed significantly to their households, whether in income or in services such as child or elder care for other members of their families. The loss of these contributions may make the loss of a parent, spouse, son or daughter more acutely felt since surviving family members must find a way to cope without the deceased person’s income and care. Personal injury attorneys can advise victims’ families of their eligibility to seek damages by filing wrongful death suits after fatal motor vehicle accidents.
