3-vehicle collision

A fatal head-on collision occurred on Nov. 4 on Illinois Route 142 just after 5 p.m. Three vehicles were involved, and the crash shut down both lanes of traffic for about five hours.

According to the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred when a 23-year-old Mt. Vernon man crossed the center line while heading north in Hamilton County about half of a mile south of the Jefferson County Line. He struck a 69-year-old Dahlgren man’s vehicle head-on and then continued north, hitting yet another vehicle.

The 69-year-old man died on the scene. The driver of the first vehicle was transported for treatment to a nearby hospital. The individual in the third vehicle was uninjured. The crash is still under investigation and charges are reportedly pending. Currently, an ISP Crash Reconstruction officer is examining the evidence.

Drivers have a responsibility to obey traffic laws and avoid creating any hazardous situations. Things such as texting or talking on the phone or driving while intoxicated can take away from one’s ability to avoid an accident. If an accident occurs and a driver was doing something that diminished their ability to uphold their responsibility as a driver, then that person may be considered negligent and can be held liable for the damages other parties may have incurred as a result of the motor vehicle accident.
The family of someone who has died in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver may want to contact a personal injury attorney. Using crash reconstructions and other available evidence, a lawyer may be able to build a civil case against the driver believed to be at fault.
