According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, a six vehicle collision that occurred on Dec. 15 in Murphysboro on New Highway 13 at the intersection of Country Club Road has left several with minor injuries. A 31-year-old Carbondale man driving a 2001 Honda Civic was charged for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Multiple vehicle collision

The accident happened around 4:36 p.m. when the man was traveling westbound on the highway and allegedly swerved from the far right lane, crossing over the passing lane and slamming into the rear car in a row of three other cars sitting in the turn lane. The impact forced a chain reaction between all of the vehicles in the turn lane and pushed them into each other, according to deputies.

At the same time, a 2014 Chevy was also heading westbound in the passing lane. When the Civic crossed in front of the Chevy, the driver lost control of her vehicle as her airbags deployed. Her car struck the sixth car on the opposite side of the intersection, and she was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police say that out of the six cars that were involved, four had to be towed from the scene.

No other injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing. It may be possible for people who are injured in similar types of accidents to recover compensation for medical bills and lost wages as well as property damage. A personal injury attorney who has experience with motor vehicle accident cases may be able to find additional evidence of driver negligence that may have been a contributing factor, such as texting while driving.
