The holidays are one of the busiest—and most stressful—travel seasons of the year. Whether you’re heading out for a long road trip or flying to visit family, a little preparation can go a long way in preventing accidents, protecting your home, and keeping your loved ones safe.
As personal injury attorneys, we see firsthand how quickly an avoidable accident can disrupt a family’s life. With that in mind, here’s a practical, easy-to-use checklist to help ensure your holiday travel is as safe and smooth as possible.
Home Safety Before You Leave
- Lock all windows and doors—double-check every entry point. Break-ins rise during the holidays when people are traveling.
- Set interior lights on timers. A simple deterrent against theft.
- Pause mail and deliveries. Overflowing mailboxes signal an empty home.
- Unplug small appliances and electronics. Reduces fire risk and prevents electrical issues.
- Set your thermostat to avoid frozen pipes. Keep it warm enough to prevent costly damage.
- Notify a trusted neighbor. Ask them to keep an eye out for anything unusual.
Safety for You & Your Family While Traveling
- Share your travel plans with someone you trust. Include routes, lodging, and emergency contacts.
- Pack medications and essentials in your carry-on. Never check anything you can’t afford to lose.
- Keep digital copies of important documents. ID, insurance cards, passports—securely stored.
- Review safety procedures with kids. Where to meet if separated, who to ask for help, etc.
- Prepare a small emergency kit. First-aid basics, chargers, water, and any needed medical supplies.
- If driving, schedule a vehicle check-up. Tires, brakes, lights, fluids—cold weather puts extra stress on your car.
Protecting Your Valuables
- Keep valuables with you, not in checked bags or cars. Jewelry, electronics, legal documents—always carry-on.
- Use TSA-approved locks. Adds an extra layer of security.
- Turn on device tracking. Find My iPhone, AirTags, or similar tools.
- Avoid broadcasting your trip on social media. Save vacation posts for after you return home.
- Store valuables securely in your home before leaving. Preferably in a safe or hidden, locked location.
