Swimming is the best way to cool down on hot summer days. Keep your family safe with these 3 tips:
#1 Wear Neon Swimsuits
ALIVE Solutions tested the visibility of common swimsuit colors in 3 locations: light bottom swimming pool, dark bottom swimming pool, and lake. Hot pink and neon orange were the clear winners.Study the graphics below to understand how visible your family’s swimsuits would be in these scenarios.
#2 Avoid Rip Currents
You’ve probably heard of rip currents, but do you know how to spot them? A rip current could pull you out deep into Lake Michigan or any large body of water. Stay safe by avoiding them altogether. If there are big waves with a calm section in the middle - avoid that area!If you do get caught in a rip current, DON’T PANIC and don’t fight the current!
What to do: Swim parallel to the shore to escape the current, then swim or tread with the waves back to land.#3 Designate a “Water Watcher”
When swimming or relaxing in a pool or hot tub, always designate a “water watcher” whose sole responsibility is to keep a close eye and constant attention on everyone in and around the water until the next water watcher takes over. It only takes a moment. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line or apply sunscreen. Stay vigilant!
