Little girl knocked off bike, lying dead by car, eyes open. She is not wearing a helmet.

Accidents involving a pedestrian are tragic. Most end in serious injuries or death because the pedestrian has no protection from the vehicle. In Illinois and around the country, it is illegal for someone to be involved in an accident and leave the scene. However, hit-and-run accidents do occur, often because the driver is simply scared of the repercussions.

In Joliet, Illinois, which is about an hour's drive from Chicago, a 14-year-old girl was killed in a car versus pedestrian accident. The driver of the vehicle that struck her left the scene. The girl was found near a median in a ditch by the intersection of Route 53 and Pheasant Run Road. She lived just a short distance from where the accident occurred.
