As an attorney who has practiced workers' compensation for the Petitioner's side and the Respondent's side, I have seen how a lack of communication can ruin a case. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are injured on the job:
1. Tell someone! You must report the injury immediately, even if you do not think that it is a big deal. You cannot go back in time. Reporting the injury is the first step towards a succesful case.
2. Fill out a report. Make sure that you or your supervisor completes a Form 45 report (First Report of Injury or Illness). This is what will be sent to the insurance company so make sure the facts are correct.
3. Seek medical attention. Even if you do not think that you will have a severe injury, it is VERY important that you seek medical help immediately. Go to the nearest hospital and be very clear about what happened. You must tell them that it was a work-related injury. They will not fill in the blanks for you. Be detailed!
4. Contact your work place and let them know what the hospital or your doctor says. If you cannot work because the doctor told you to remain off work, then your job has to know. You do not want to be "missing in action." Always keep your job up-to-date on your work status.
