A fatal vehicular accident has left 23 people injured, two in critical condition and three dead. The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 5; police say that a total of 11 cars were involved after a wrong-way pickup truck barreled into traffic at a stop light at a high rate of speed.
The two victims who were reported to be in critical condition were transported to Oak Lawn’s Advocate Christ Medical Center. Other injured commuters were taken to Palos Community Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as an 81-year-old man from Morgan Park. While police are still investigating whether a medical condition or intoxication may have caused the accident, eye-witness reports do confirm that the elderly gentleman was seen slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle prior to the accident. Police state that a good Samaritan, who noticed the man slumped over his wheel, had asked if he needed help before the accident occurred. The large car accident later resulted after the man had fled another accident scene in which he had hit three other vehicles.
Due to the size and severity of the accident in question, several injured individuals may require extensive medical treatment and might be forced to miss work.
