Male runner seriously injured after being hit by a car

Early in the morning hours of Nov. 20, a car struck an 18-year-old cross-country runner in Palatine, authorities reported. The Palatine High School student was running north with his team of seven runners in the crosswalk at the intersection of Palatine Road and Rohlwing Road when a 39-year-old man, also from Palatine, turned his 2000 Chevrolet Camaro left into the crosswalk from Rohlwing Road at approximately 6:45 a.m, striking the young runner. According to police, the youth suffered severe head trauma in the incident.

The runner was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. According to police, the teen’s condition was reported as stable, and his life was no longer threatened by the injuries suffered in the accident. The Camaro driver was uninjured.

According to witnesses, both the car and the runners had a green light. An accident investigation is being conducted by the regional Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team in conjunction with the Palatine Police Department. While the driver of the Camaro was cited for not yielding to a pedestrian and driving with an obscured windshield, further citations could be issued pending the investigation results.

When individuals are injured in a pedestrian accident, their injuries could be severe, as in this case. The injured party and his or her family, in the case of a student, could also be suffering from the financial ramifications of the accident. A personal injury attorney could help by investigating the evidence and eyewitness accounts in the case. He or she could then help by filing a claim on behalf of the injured party to pursue compensation to help with pressing issues like medical bills. In some cases, compensation could also cover non-pecuniary damages like pain and suffering in addition to monetary damages like lost income if the victim missed work due to the injuries suffered in the accident.
