Chicago police recently filed multiple charges against a 28-year-old man accused of fleeing the scene of an accident that injured multiple people and left one woman paralyzed. The Sept. 13 incident took place on West Erie Street. Purportedly, that is where the 28-year-old man exited his disabled vehicle and took a taxi to his Naperville residence, leaving behind four acquaintances.

According to a police report, the 28-year-old man was the driver of a vehicle carrying four friends who had just visited a Chicago nightclub. Reportedly, the man was driving on Erie Street at speeds that some of the passengers feared was too high. Authorities reported that the man’s vehicle ran off the roadway and struck several objects before falling 25 feet and landing upside down on a set of railroad tracks.

All four of the vehicle’s passengers suffered injuries in the accident, authorities stated. A 25-year-old woman in the vehicle would become paralyzed from the waist down, reportedly. The driver, who turned himself into authorities a week after the accident, is facing multiple charges in connection with the car accident, including a felony count of failure to report an accident resulting in injury.

As this case exemplifies, traffic accidents have the potential to cause immense damage and inflict severe injuries upon the people involved in them. People injured in auto accidents often suffer more than just physical afflictions. In many cases, accident victims and their families suffer serious financial hardship stemming from the intractable costs related to hospital bills and long-term rehabilitation and therapy for their injuries. For this reason, accident victims often retain the representation of a personal injury attorney, who may help them seek compensation for the economic damages they suffered via civil action.
